Sometimes - most times, as happened last night, spirits will give us something in return for communicating with living loved ones. They can do a multitude of things, let me share with you some of my experiences.
Last night, which is what spurred me to do this post, a friend's Great-Grandfather (not Theo's), asked me to do a reading for his Great Granddaughter (my friend, who we will call Miranda for anonymity sake), lent me energy. He could see that I was ill and tired, more than usual, and so he touched my chest (around the solar plexus) after the reading, and then left my home. Today I was able to shop AND do a workout that burned a good 450 calories! Now my chronic illness doesn't usually let me do more than a 130 calorie workout, if that - so it was wonderful to be able to do it right after shopping with my family. It was a good deal of energy, and it was enough to also pull me out of my emotional slump, which was also caused by fatigue and pain.
Donating energy is one way to pay the medium back, but there are more ways.
Spirits will feel like they have to "pay" you back, and so sometimes they'll wait until there's a crisis to help you. When going through a very rough and rather dramatic breakup a few years ago, many spirits that I had previously helped seemed to "cuddle" around me. They counseled me about my problems, as they were concerned I was heading down a dark path. They would speak to me when I was alone, and make sure I wasn't alone at any time, and even played harmless tricks on my ex (or so I heard). I used to be a very big fan of revenge, but now I understand that it's not justice, it's a cycle that creates too much bad Karma - locking us into a downward emotional spiral. When I was more into the revenge business (as a teen, those days are gone), the spirits would do much more violent serious things, especially when the trespassers had hurt me physically. Spirits can be very vengeful to whomever hurts their link to the living world; and also, as spiritual communication shares a very intimate link - they get to see you inside and out, and usually this creates a mutually powerful bond. Like knowing someone for a few years, but slightly different. Hard to explain.
Spirits can also enhance readings for the medium. After I do a communication for the loved ones of that spirit, they will often show me a glimpse of insight into my life, my future, and sometimes even let me contact a spirit that is less able to communicate - like combining forces. Some spirits are VERY hard to communicate, and joining forces is the only way to hear them. But that's another post.
To recap: They can give you energy/force/a lift, they can offer a helping hand in your external world, they can keep you company, give you counsel, they can give you more psychic energy to see more in readings, and they can combine forces with you in harder communications with other - less easily contacted spirits.
Oh, one last thing - some spirits will haunt you until you do what they want, and after the reading, as payback, they'll leave you alone. Just like Theo's Great-Grandfather (see previous post about the Powerful Great-Grandfather). This is dirty play, but when they leave you alone after months or years of haunting, you don't complain - otherwise they might just continue!!
Don't expect ALL spirits to balance the scale.. some will get what they want from you - and then leave you hanging. Others, when I get paid for my services, will tell me that the payment is enough, that they don't need to give me anything - and I agree. Always be polite to spirits, otherwise they'll bug you until you say uncle.
